OUR WHY
Running is common ground. We want to share it with girls around the globe.
Our Mission
Capability is equally distributed worldwide. Opportunity is not. We provide girls with the opportunity to participate in sport and in turn, the opportunity to set themselves up for long term success. Sport is an incredible vehicle for positive change and we aim to leverage its impact to unlock the true potential of girls globally. With opportunity and the proper tools, these girls are the change we hope to see for the world: one in which every girl knows their worth and capability and where gender is no barrier to success and opportunity.
Why Running?
#1 Combination of individualism and teamwork
Running allows girls to test their individual limits. It also fosters a safe community where they work alongside peers to achieve something bigger. This unique combination of individualism and community is what makes this sport so special.
Running is the perfect tool for empowering women and girls to achieve their goals. Here’s why:
#2 Development of essential life skills
When a girl finishes her run, she feels capable of conquering anything! Running develops skills that translate into all areas of life and improve girls’ ability to handle the challenges they face — self-efficacy, resilience, leadership, the list goes on!
#3 Accessibility
Compared to other sports, running requires very little equipment and there is no cap on participant numbers. This makes it easier to share with more girls and is why it is a great vehicle for social progress and empowerment of young girls.
#4 Mental & Physical Health
The physical health benefits of running are well-known, but just as important are its impact on mental and emotional wellbeing: improved cognitive function, lower risk of disease, improved self-esteem, reduced stress levels — and many more!
Why Girls?
Women and girls represent half the world’s population and half its opportunity. Still, barriers continue to prevent girls back from unlocking their full potential which not only perpetuates a cycle of gender inequality, but also prevents global development goals from being met.
Empowering girls isn’t just a women’s issue. It’s also…
-
Educated and empowered girls drive economic growth. Closing the gender gap could increase a country's GDP by 35% and boost the global economy by $12 trillion or more.*
-
Educated and empowered girls are less vulnerable to violence, experience less maternal and child deaths, and overall help build healthier communities,
-
Women are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate changes, but they can also be an incredible part of the solution. Empowered and educated girls can help protect their communities and mitigate the effects of global warming.
-
A better world for women and girls is a better world for everyone. It's just that simple.
Learn about what we do:
-
Sport.
Girls Run Global running teams equip girls with skills that set them up for success in the long run. We support them as they make strides towards a future they dream of – for themselves, their communities, and the globe as a whole.
-
Life Skills.
Adolescence is a time of immense vulnerability, but also of incredible opportunity. During this crucial point in their lives, we help girls develop the skills they need to overcome the challenges they face and find life-long success
-
Mentorship.
Girls growing up in challenging environments are rarely afforded the chance to think about, yet alone pursue, their aspirations in life. Mentors support girls’ ability to maximize their potential so that they go on to do the same for future generations.
